SINEMA is a mobile health APP that specifically provides data support for rural doctors and send reminders and suggestions on medication and exercise to patients on a regular basis. Professor Lijing L. Yan of Duke Kunshan University with her team spent a year conducting extensive background field research on intervention design and technology development. They conducted intervention and controlled studies in 1299 stroke patients and 50 villages randomly. Patients in the intervention group received monthly follow-ups and daily voice messages from doctors through the SINEMA app, while in the control group, participants received traditional nursing services. Professor Lijing Yan and other collaborators also carried out customized interventions in rural areas with high illiteracy rates, that is, recording and sending short voice messages in the local dialect to cover disadvantaged and hard-to-reach patients. After the 12-month trial, they found out that the probability of recurrence, hospitalization, disability and even death caused by stroke has been reduced a lot. SINEMA’s research results show its importance.
